Birzeit University was the first institution of higher education
to be established in Palestine. It provides students with the opportunity to
realize their academic aspirations and encourages them to be productive
citizens and active members of their community. The university plays a central
role in developing the most valuable national resource in society – the
Palestinian people.
The University Advancement Programme:
Birzeit University has identified the need for international volunteers to be involved in numerous projects at the University, from English workshops to creating donor videos to supporting students to be more involved in their local communities.
Aims:
a) Young people in the local community will have increased personal
skills
b) Increasing the profile of the university and issues facing
students and the community such as the quality of, and access to education and
extracurricular activities through campaigning, media and communications,
events
c) Students at Birzeit University to have increased individual
capacity to create and organise their own student projects
d) Students and faculty to have enhanced international outreach
The Right to Education Programme:
The Right to Education Campaign is a grassroots student-to-student
solidarity project that aims at building the capacity of Palestinian and UK
students to document and raise awareness about oppression of Palestinian
students, teachers and academic institutions under Israeli military occupation. It is a student run campaign with a committee composed of faculty and
administrative staff from a number of departments and institutes within Birzeit
University.
Outcomes will include:
a) Improved internal organisational capacity
of the Right to Education Campaign
b) Students at universities in the West Bank
empowered with skills and information to speak out against violations to the
right to education
c) Increased research and documentation
produced and shared on the topic of education under Israeli occupation and one
of the results of this will be that student groups around the world are
informed about the plight of students under occupation
d) Through communications, advocacy, campaigns
and partnerships to improve high level government or international policies
that improve the human rights of the vulnerable and the marginalised
